Technology and the IEP – Adapted keyboards and talking computer

The second type of AT that can be used in an IEP is an adapted keyboard along with a talking word processor.

Annual Goal: Kelly will use an adapted keyboard with custom overlays and a computer with talking word processing to complete all academic work.

Kelly has physical limitations that do not allow him to use a standard keyboard and difficulty with speech. An adapted keyboard with an overlay will permit him to type his thoughts while a talking word processor allows him to express them.  He will experience independence and a great sense of accomplishment.  Kelly will use the technology in each class with minimal goals, as each goal is met they will be increased. Eventually he may become independent.
