The development of the use of
augmentative or assistive technology in the home and the community promotes
independence for students with disabilities.
A student who successfully uses
this technology at school needs to be encouraged by family members to also use
it at home. The student must be
encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities that will enable him to
us the device in the community. The device will need to be updated in order to
include vocabulary that correlates with the activities in which he is involved.
In order for this transition into the community to be successful there must be
a strong working relationship between the family and the school.
